The  eReader market has been bustling for the last 6 months, with the crescendo happening at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas earlier in the year. And more and more Mobile Device Brokers and Liquidation Specialists are entering into this new market. Here are some basics for those that "have a need (and active desire) to know...."

04read_xlarge1.jpg

An E Reader is a portable reading device that can deliver an entire book right to your hands, classics to best sellers. You can also read your favorite newspaper, magazine subscription, PDF files or Word documents. Depending on the model you choose, the text is downloaded from your computer or delivered digitally with a wireless connection. Turn the pages with the touch of a button, highlight passages, make notations, and mark your place with ease. Put away the reading glasses and have text delivered in the size you require. These little gadgets are light and are about the size of a paperback. Carry an ereader anywhere with a supply of about 200 books, even more with an extra memory card inserted.

Many companies are jumping on the bandwagon and creating their own version of the ereader, but two stand out in the US market, the Sony Reader and the Amazon Kindle. They are basically the same type of reader with the exception of two key features.

The Sony model has been in the market place longer. With it you will need a computer to download material and then transfer to the device via a USB cable or flash drive. It is also the lower priced of the two.

The Kindle is Amazons version and was released only last year. (2007) It became scarce around Christmas when Amazon completely sold out of the product. Although you can use a computer to transfer books, it is not a mandatory piece of equipment. Books arrive through a free wireless network within minutes of placing your order through the device. You can even preview and read a little of the book before buying. The more expensive of the two readers described here, but may be worth the extra cash for it's true portability.

The obvious advantage to owning an ereader is that you can read whatever whenever without having to carry around a stack of books or magazines. Save them all to the device and carry it on vacation, on long plane flights, or anywhere you expect a long wait, like the doctor's office.

The future holds great possibilities. Imagine paperless textbooks for students around the world. Books downloaded from a computer or delivered digitally to the student's device the first day of class. The savings to our local school districts and the preservation of trees would be well worth the cost of a device students can carry with them throughout their academic life and even beyond.

Explain why other ebooks may not work with the eReader software?

eReader is an application used to read eReader (or files with the extension .pdb) eBooks on your Palm OS, Pocket PC, Windows, Symbian, Windows Mobile Smartphone or Mac. Without eReader, you will not be able to read eReader eBooks, and other eBook Readers will not work with eReader.com eBooks. eReader.com eBooks are encrypted to protect the authors' work. In addition, the eReader can display styled text (italicized, underlined, etc.) and formatting as well as perform functions not found on other eBook readers. There is no charge to download and use eReader.

From Bobby Victor Kale - Research Mngr Cloud Apps, at Dell-Co Labs, Austin 8-1-10

"The  eReader market seemed to be bustling for the last 6 months, with the crescendo happening at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas earlier in the year. And more and more Mobile Device Brokers and Liquidation Specialists are entering into this new market.

With the success of the iPad, and other more affordable Slate PC’s, such as the  Archos 7 which displays full color, we have seen more consumers gravitating towards the multi-media driven devices, rather than a device that just functions as an E-Reader.

Many mainstay eReader companies over the last few years have closed up shop. For example, the latest 12 filings for failure last month, and the eCool-Reader are currently in court diving up their corporate assets.

Other more promising e-readers, such as the Plastic Logic, have refunded all of the existing pre-orders and canceled plans to release the product anytime soon.

If you look at the trend, most e-readers that have failed in the market place, or decided against even entering it. Although they have had viable products, they just could not competitively meet the current device expectations.

“Companies that had neither brand nor distribution have failed,” says Sarah Rotman Epps, an analyst for Forrester Research.

Many of the more popular e-readers right now, such as the Amazon Kindle, Barnes and Noble Nook, Sony E-Readers, and Kobo are all backed by large book stores and have direct ties to their entire content network of electronic books. Which makes those products more viable for the end user because of an extensive selection, which ranges in the hundreds of thousands of books to choose from.

Although content distribution is not the only factor to make the big 4 popular with customers, there is also the price point. All of the companies in the last few months have slashed prices on their e-readers. You can now buy a Kindle 2 for $189.00, a Nook for $199 and Sony cut prices on every e-reader available.

The price slashes seem to have worked. Amazon claims to have sold triple the amount of Kindles bringing the price down from $254 to $189 in a matter of months. More users are buying e-readers now that the price is in the 100.00 range.

This price slash on e-readers is directly linked to the success of the Apple iPad. As we mentioned, users are gravitating more to multi-media devices, instead of buying the single-purpose E-Readers. This is galvanizing electronic reader companies to use more feasible operating systems for expanded content, such as Google Android, and its plethora of applications available. Even Amazon is hiring new staff for a new Web Browser, Email and recently introduced Facebook and Twitter updates in its latest firmware update.

Although more people this year will buy tablet computers instead of e-readers, this does not mean that people will give up on them completely. The Shift to Digital Books is indeed here to stay. Forrester Research estimates 6.6 million e-readers will be sold in the United States this year. Approximately 29.4 million e-readers may be sold in the United States by 2016, compared to 59 million tablets.

Earlier this week, Amazon said for the first time sales of e-books are outstripping hardcovers. In June, Amazon sold 180 e-books for every 100 hardcovers. In the first six months of the year, the company sold three times as many e-books as it did in the first half of 2009."

We see a lot of our east coast Mobile Device Brokers making good money by acquiring corporate eReaders on the IT Asset Disposal pipelines. Here are some basics for those that are curious.

The $150 Barnes and Noble (B&N) Nook is a wifi only eReader while the 3G + wifi Nook is priced $199.  The huge price cut is because the wifi only Nook will not use a wireless company or any 3rd party service to get updates or new eBooks, so all you need is access to any wifi; which means no hidden costs and no raising rates in the future.   Having a B&N Nook might be the perfect eReader if you like the books in the B&N eBook collection, enjoy reading eBooks, want to borrow eBooks from your local library and/or lend out your eBooks to fellow Nook owners.  With the B&N Nook, no matter which version, you will have access to the entire B&N collection including magazines, books and newspapers without driving to the actual B&N location.  Also, if you do visit the B&N store you will get exclusive content, special discounts, and read complete eBooks free while in store.

eReader Overview

  • An eReader (also called e-book reader, e-book device or e-reader) is a tech gadget that is designed primarily for the purposes to store and read ebooks/eperiodicals.
  • An eReader application (app) will allow a user to read ebooks/eperiodicals on other electronic devices like a laptop or smartphone; for the sake of simplifying this article all mentions of an eReader also applies to the equivalent eReader app.
  • eBook (short for electronic book and also known as a digital book, e-book, and eBook) is a text-based book that is available in a digital format that is equivalent to a conventional printed book. These ebooks come in all sorts of formats. Not all ebook formats are readable on all eReaders.  To make it more complicated most eReader companies control what is readable on their device via Digital Rights Management (DRM).
What is DRM?

DRM is a generic term for access control technologies that can be used by hardware manufacturers, publishers, copyright holders and individuals to impose limitations on the usage of eBooks and eReaders. Typically DRM restrictions are to limit copying, printing, and sharing of eBooks. eBooks are usually limited to a certain number of reading devices and some publishers prevent any copying or printing. The DRM is what makes choosing an eReader difficult.  Here is an example of DRM control:Amazon remotely deleted purchased copies of George Orwell’s 1984 and Animal Farm from customer’s Amazon Kindles. These were books that they had bought and paid for; users thought they owned the ebook. But no, the publisher changed its mind about offering an electronic edition, and Amazon electronically deleted all books by this author from people’s Kindles and credited their accounts for the price. This would not happen if you actually bought the  printed book. Amazon would not have come to your home and take back the books from your personal shelf.  Deciding to move towards an eReader is not really like a printed book collection; once you’re finished reading an eBook you can’t resell or even donate them. DRM teaches, when buying an eBook, all sales may not even be final.

Most Important Functions of an eReader

Picking the right eReader depends on a couple of factors, from least to most important:

10. Features

This is about reading books; having games, access to the web or blogs should not be that important. If it is, maybe a laptop would be best – remember you will not have a keyboard.

9. Price (eReader & eBooks)

I put the price and features as least important; why buy any electronic device if the basic functions aren’t available or that you can’t financially maintain?  Who cares about playing games, accessing the web or video.  This is about reading books. If you want to do more than reading I would suggest getting a netbook.

8. How does it download

How does your eReader install the eBook to the device?  The new wifi only B&N Nook uses any wifi access to download and install eBooks. Since most people have access to a public wifi this makes much more sense than relying on syncing with a computer, satellite service or costly wireless cellular provider. But make sure you do not have any cost associated with adding books to your eReader, please read the fine print.

7. Memory card reader

Make sure your eReader has an option to upgrade the memory either via hardware or with a memory card. If it doesn’t you will have to delete bought ebooks off your device to make room for new ebooks.

6. Collection size

The eReader digital collection size is essential. Make sure your manufacturer’s eReader digital collection has recent releases, best sellers lists and carry your favorite genre.

5. Rental option

If you are limited to only buying, rather than renting or borrowing eBooks for your eReader it will become a very expensive hobby.  Make sure your manufacturer’s eReader digital collection has a rental option.

4. Multiple eBook formats

There are plenty free eBook sites online, but they lack a standard format. Look through the best free eBook online collections (http://tinyurl.com/25thh7v) and see if your desired eReader supports the collection’s format.

3. Battery live

Why get an eReader that cuts out at the good parts.

2. Ability to download eBooks from your local library?

The DRM limitations of eReaders make it unappealing to buy any ebook, but getting your eBooks free from your local library (http://www.netlibrary.com/) will make your eReader an essential device. Make sure your eReader is compatible with your local library’s digital collection. Compatible eReaders with Wisconsin public libraries’ digital collection include Barnes & Noble Nook, Sony Digital Readers, as well as many others. (http://tinyurl.com/2chj3bc)

1. Weight

The weight is the most important feature you should be concerned with. This is not a laptop, monitor or something easily propped up. You will be holding the eReader on an angle just like you hold a book.  An eReader weighing 1.5 lbs, the average weight of a 500+ page hardcover, will be a bit annoying after an hour.

                                     Conclusion:

With public libraries facing budget cuts and shortened operating hours many are turning to eReaders. I am a person who loves printed books; nothing beats the ability to turn a page or not having to worry if there is enough battery to finish a chapter. Ensuring your public library receives adequate funding is as easy as checking out a book. Libraries have access to more ebooks, periodicals and reference books than any eReader depository. Borrowing eBooks from your public Library is free.
